And Exactly Who Are You?

“Promises may fit the friends, but non-performance will turn them into enemies.”
-Benjamin Franklin

Commitment is a funny thing.

Many people take the word commitment for granted. I am definitly guilty of that. I've abused the concept in the past so readily that I'm amazed I yet have any friends. At least I think I have friends.

From the simplest agreement, "I'll see you at 7:00," to the most public political proclamations, "No new taxes," to our most personal declarations, "...in sickness and in health...," all of these are contracts that we enter into with our integrity as collateral. Though we seldom think about it that way, others definitely do. It only takes one tardy arrival to garner an "always late" label. If we don't show up? That is sometimes unrecoverable. But I think you get the point.

In the end it is our integrity that is either maintained or damaged. It doesn't matter how late we are. It doesn't matter that another development has come up that has caused us to change our minds. Whatever the reason, big or small, when we first say "yes," "OK," "deal," "I do," or "So help me God," we put our integrity on the line. And stripped of all else, it is our integrity after all that defines us.

Hope your Independence Day is GREAT!

Our flag is still there.

Our land is still free.
